3.4 Hand Drawn Design for Classroom Courtyard
This project involves creating a design for a 6x8 meter space adjacent to a primary school classroom. If properly designed, the principal of the school believes that the space might provide an opportunity for teachers to take their class outdoors when the weather is suitable. The courtyard is walled on three sides (the rendered wall is 1800mm high) and can be entered from the classroom, although a path separates the classoom from the enclosed outdoor space. The figure below shows an impression of the space. The direction of north is up.

Things you may like to consider:
- The client would like to see changes in levels in the space as a challenge to students. Some students use a wheelchair and so at least part of the space must cater to their needs. Research on space required for a wheelchair is required.
- Is there a need for sun protection for students?
- Will a chalkboard be needed?
- Could an amphitheatre and inbuilt seats for students be created (possibly wood or stone rounds for sitting)?
- Would a pond be worthwhile (remember that it needs to be easily managed when school holidays are on)?
- Can you provide versatile hanging spaces?
- Could storage lockers be provided?
- Are security gates on footpath required etc.
We have given you a comprehensive list of requiremenst to simulate a real job - clienst often have a long list and it is often not possible to fit everything in.
Prerequisites
Visit the Learning Support site and take the courses appropriate for this project [designing for the disabled.]
The project
The figure below shows the dimensions of the site. We want you to create your design on an A3 or A4 sheet using an appropriate scale.

Scan your finished drawing -this may involve a visit to a local print bureau because you may not have access to an A3 scanner. You are advised to get to know that staff at the local print center, it's a place you will visit many times in the future)and send it to us as an attachment to an email note at info@gardencad.net.
An example
Here is an example of the type of presentation required. This student has inluded a north indicator, a logo and a scale indicator. His species list is by no means complete, nor has he attended to some of the suggested requirements. Most schools now require some type of shade sail to protect students from the sun when they are outdoors.

The designer revisited things and (we think) came up with an improved design. They have added a logo and details of the site location.

Note the difficulty he had in accurately setting out the size and positioning of the shade sails. This is much better done using a computer (CAD) program. Please scan your drawing and send as an attachment to info@gardencad.net
