Using layers effectively - lighting design

Managing layers

A layer (containing entities) such as a wiring diagram for a garden lighting system, can be turned on or off. This ability of CAD to turn layers on and off has many advantages as from a single design (with layers such as Construction, Irrigation, lighting, paving, wetand etc.), many drawings can be generated.

The layer dialog box is used to control layer visibility, colour and linetype associated with a layer and lock layers.

Locking layers

By now you would have realized that it is easy to inadvertedly move an item on a layer. If a layer is locked then nothing on that layer can be editied. This is a great feature; when you have finished working on a layer, lock it!

You use the layers dialog box to lock a layer (see figure below).

Lock Layers

Open one of your GardenCAD drawings and lock a layer. Try selecting or moving an item on that layer.

After some experimentation, using layers, reurn to one of your earlier drawings and produce a lighting design for the space.

Upload your drawing to the Google Docs space.

You might find it useful to visit a local lighting retailer and refer to some Internet references on garden lighting.
