The SketchUp interface
Let's start by looking at the SketchUp environment before any part of a model has been created.

The figure below shows the SketchUp interface prior to developing a model; no entities have been placed into the drawing editor at. As you can see, the software is designed to work the way you might design in 3D - perspective is turned on and the three drawing axes are clearly visible. Each axis is coloured - respectively red X, Y green and Z blue. This is a very different approach to most CAD software applications. The human figure in the corner near the conjunction of the axes helps give the designer a sense of size.

We will study the Sandbox extension, which is used to create realistic organic shapes and terrain.
