5.1 Polygonal Site & Building Footprint

To this point, all your site analysis drawings have been of rectangular sites. Although these may be the most common shaped areas you deal with, there will be many times when the site boundaries make an irregular polygon. In this project, you will create a GardenCAD drawing of a site with a house set inside a polygonal site bounday. The figure below shows the finished site plan.

Tip  The drawing you will complete is by no means a complete site anaysis, we need to record different microclimate areas withing the site and other internal features beside the house. Inter alia, there may well be ugly views or noisy neighbours which need to be screened out.

The data from our field book:

House footprint

The figure below shows the dimensions of the footprint of the house. From this data, you can draw the footprint.

 Dimensions

For interest, here is some more information about the house. You are not required to draw that level of detail for this project, although a proper site analysis would certainly indicate the position of windows.

Triangulation data

The figure below shows the distance data for our triangulation measurements (in magenta).

Trainulation

You may find it difficult to read these numbers, so we have provided a PDF file of this data. Please download and work from a print of it when you are doing this exercise. Please click here to download the pdf file.

Submit your assignment in the usual way to info@gardencad.net. Please include an estimate of the site area (in square meters) and and estimate of the area available for a garden outside the house. Use tools in GardenCADs information drop down menu for this.

Extending this exercise

Why not assume that the direction of North is up (at 90 degrees) and produce a site analysis, site concept and detailed landscape design for the site? Submit your effort as an attachment to an email in the usual way to info@gardencad.net.

Site concept

Here I am flirting with the idea of placing major spaces in the garden at a 45 degree angle. Your will undoubtedly be different.

Concept

Upload your drawings to your Google Docs area when you have completed them.
