2.5 Design a Logo

We want you to hand sketch and colour, several alternative versions of a design for a logo for your landscape consultancy. This logo is part of the 'branding' of your garden design consultancy and will of course be used over and over again on many documents (both colour and black and white) so it deserves some thought and trialling. The elements in the logo should reflect the philosophy and aims of your business.

Tip  You will make a CAD version of your logo in a later project.

Prerequisites:

As you know from the first exercise, we will almost always ask you to complete some preliminary work each time you start a new project. Before attempting this particular project, you should have completed the following:

  1. Visit the learning support site [http://www.gardencad.net/online] and take the courses appropriate for this project. We have provided a module on graphic design which tries to give you as much help as we can about graphic design - a difficult and very personal topic - and we have included some examples from landscapers who run their own consultancy.
  2. You may even like to re-visit some of the internet links on the use of colour etc. from the earlier plant symbols project (Project 1.1).

This project

We  ask you to prepare at least three different (coloured) versions of your logo. One design should show a drawing title block with the logo in use (see later).

Several examples of logos produced by our landscape design students are shown below.

Conduct a survey

Make several versions of your logo and conduct a poll among your friends and colleagues. The winner of the poll may surprise you. The simplest logo is often the best logo.

Logos do not stand alone

Do not design your logo in isolation. Think about how your logo might be used in a title block. The figure below shows a simple logo and title block design developed by Michelle Parsons.

Logo in title block

Practice your hand drafting and lettering skills by producing a title block drawing similar to the above.

To complete this project, please scan at least three versions of your logo (one including its use in a title block) and email them as attacments to an email note to info@gardencad.net
